The permanent Nomenclature Committee for Fungi (NCF) is appointed by the Fungal Nomenclature Session of the International Mycological Congress. Its task is to discuss and vote on Formal proposals concerning conservation and rejection of fungal names, and on requests for binding decisions (such as on homonymy). In addition, the NCF discusses and votes on lists of names of fungi for protection or rejection that are compiled by working groups set up in consultation with the International Commission on the Taxonomy of Fungi. The NCF also provides an opinion on formal proposals to modify the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants with respect to fungal names; and appoints the repositories that issue identifiers required for nomenclatural novelties in fungi and typification acts for names of fungi (from 2019).
The Nomenclature Committee for Fungi (NCF) at present has 16 members from across the globe, with expertise on the range of organisms treated as fungi.
Those with nomenclatural problems are encouraged to contact NCF members for advice. If you find any particular fungal name that requires protection, it is recommended that you publish a proposal either to conserve that name or to reject an undesirable name, possibly in collaboration with a member of the committee. Alternatively, you can engage with the NCF/ICTF working groups that are compiling lists of names for protection or rejection.
